Math, Algebra, Study Hall, Target Practice
Well, I see HERE that yet another one of our precious children had it up to here with society yesterday. So he took himself down the local family-friendly Walmart, bought himself a few pistols and a shotgun, and proceeded to his school. When he got there, he proceeded to blow away anyone he saw, and eyewitnesses say he was laughing and waving during the whole ordeal.
To state the obvious, this is a horrible tragedy.
However, I can’t help but reflect on a society that allows one of its children to get so fed up with his own life and prospects for the future that he decides to commit suicide, and bring people with him to boot.
America is supposedly this wonderful country, full of freedom and opportunity. We stand as a beacon of light on the hill of civilization, preaching our ways to the third world masses. Last I recall, no one in Ethiopia was killing people at the local school – they were probably too busy starving to death and avoiding genocide.
Admittedly, things are better here than they are most places – but we seem to have some problems that come along with that – problems no one else has. Take a look at our drug epidemics, our race wars, our homophobia. We cannot guarantee health care to our citizens, nor retirement when they get old. We can’t be sure that our high school graduates are literate, and we have never been able to guarantee more than 15 years without a major war or conflict.
To make matters worse, when something like this disaster happens, it takes second place in the news. First Place? Ah, yes, its the fight over the proposed euthanasia of a woman who will obviously never recover. Why are we so concerned with the rights of Terri Schiavo and not the rights of our children to grow up without fear, without oppression, and without catching some #7 buckshot?
I think I’ve spent enough time on this blog imploring you all to become more familiar with current events, but now I implore you to read the news and notice the placement of the stories. Notice what comes first and what is buried on page 97.
Notice what they don’t mention at all…
